HV JAZZ JAM in the Underground
Led by local drummer Bryan Kopchak, Hudson Valley Jazz Jam has been called "the best jam in the Hudson Valley". After nearly 3 years of success at it's primary location at Quinn's in Beacon, NY, the jam has become a hub for local legends, up-and-coming players and aspiring students alike. Recognizing the competitive nature of some New York City jazz sessions, Bryan aspires to maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all players, while simultaneously raising the bar towards a level of musicianship that inspires not only the musicians, but the audience as well. The mission is simple: Unite musicians across the Hudson Valley into a communal presence, to represent an expansive culture of music, art and expression that is accessible to various communities. To also serve as an educational hub for musicians of all calibers and most importantly, foster a learning environment for young students.
To non-musicians: This jam brings out some of the best musicians the Hudson Valley has to offer, and the sense of community is a 'vibe' unto itself that is worth the experience alone. All are encouraged to attend!
For interested musicians:
- The featured house band plays a few tunes to start the night off.
- Following that, the jam opens up to anyone who wants to play.
- There is no sign-up sheet! (At least for now) Come and talk to Bryan directly to sign-up.
- The Falcon is a donation-based venue; that being said, we are humbly asking that all participating musicians donate a minimum of $5 as a sign-up fee. This helps ensure that we can consistently provide an amazing house band.
- Participants are expected to play songs from The Real Book or Great American Songbook. We also suggest calling tunes that everyone is comfortable with, to encourage memorization with little to no reading. Free improvisations are also welcomed! (with a time-limit, of course...)
- House drum kit, bass amp, guitar amp, piano, organ and PA are provided, so just bring your instrument if need be!
