Alex Hamburger Quartet
Over the last decade, flutist, vocalist, and composer Alex Hamburger has been creating her own musical direction. Her acclaimed sophomore album, What If? (Unit Records), blends acoustic and electric textures to explore transformation and perception, while her upcoming duo release, Catalog of Dreams (Challenge Records), with Brazilian pianist/composer José Luiz Martins, takes an intimate and creative approach to music that has shaped them.
Her music has been praised by All About Jazz, Jazzthing, Bandcamp, and more as "allowing the listener be immersed within the blurred lines and the harmonious coexistence of light and dark that ultimately remind us all of the interconnectedness of our shared human experience."
Alex continues to tour across the U.S., Europe, and South America with her own project, as well as as a sidewoman for many artists, including most recently having co-produced Brazilian pianist José Luiz Martins' Odyssey Mixtape, winner of the DCJazzPrix.
Alex also remains deeply connected to the DC music community as Managing Director of CapitalBop, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting, preserving, and presenting jazz in DC, as well as founder of My Body My Festival, a fundraiser for the DC Abortion Fund, and as a member of the GRAMMY Recording Academy DC Chapter and Strathmore Artist in Residence class.

Raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, within the DC music scene by a family of accomplished artists, her passion for music ignited at a young age. After some time in New York and studying at prestigious institutions in New York and Switzerland, Alex returned to DC with a renewed sense of purpose.
Alex's highly anticipated sophomore album, What If? (Unit Records), delves into perception, transition, and the boundaries of human experience. The album fuses electric and acoustic sounds for an immersive narrative that continues to stir up glowing testimonials from publications such as All About Jazz, Jazzthing, Vents Magazine, and Bandcamp.
Her debut album, And She Spoke (November 2020), explores the diverse concept of the female voice through original compositions based on poetry by female poets and personalized arrangements of compositions by female composers. August 2025 marks the release of her debut duo album, Catalog of Dreams, on Challenge Records with her creative partner, Brazilian pianist and composer José Luiz Martins.
Alex was a member of the esteemed Focusyear band at JazzCampus in Basel, Switzerland, in 2019, where she had the privilege of studying and performing for a year with the prestigious international ensemble that released the album Open Paths on Neuklang Records. Alex has also been awarded grants from organizations such as South Arts Jazz Roads, Chamber Music America, and Pathways to Jazz to help fund her recording and touring endeavors.
Alex's journeys abroad ignited the flame for her to continue captivating audiences worldwide with her internationally acclaimed performances, as she continues to tour around the world. Having toured throughout Europe, South America, and the U.S. with her project, as well as playing and touring with her own projects, she remains an important member of many other touring and recording ensembles such as Keith Butler's Seysew, Origem, Lucas Ashby's Brain Trust, Abe Mamet Sextet, and Biomorphic Forms, as well as pop groups like Bright Eyes.
She is an integral member of José Luiz Martins' quartet, producing their 2024 album, Odyssey Mixtape, which garnered reviews from publications like DownBeat and Modern Drummer, and was named one of CapitalBop's top albums of the year. The group also won the prestigious DCJazzPrix competition held by the DC Jazz Festival.
While captivating audiences worldwide, Alex remains deeply connected to the DC music community. She was a member of the Strathmore Artist in Residence class and is a multiple-time Wammie Awards nominee. Alex actively contributes to her hometown's musical landscape as the producer and founder of My Body My Festival, a fundraiser for the DC Abortion Fund, as well as serving as Director of CapitalBop, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting, preserving, and presenting jazz in DC, and as a member of the GRAMMY Recording Academy DC Chapter.
